About the speaker

Ekaterina Redkina is a psychologist and a qualified EFL teacher with more than 13-year experience. She is CELTA and Delta (M1-2) holder and a Fulbright scholar. For years she has been teaching English to psychology students and professional psychologists. Currently, she is working at the Department of psychology at Lomonosov Moscow State University.

Besides psychologists, Ekaterina has had experience teaching architects, designers, and journalists. She also works with teenage students and adults. Her primary interests are psychology for the English teachers, CLIL, ESP, EAP, Syllabus and material design, and the use of IT in the ELT practice.

The course consists of four main webinars and four follow-up sessions that cover the most important topics necessary for the English teachers:
the psychology of different age groups, motivation, cognition, and affect. All the sessions presuppose theoretical inputs and practically oriented activities.The final topic shifts focus from the learner to the teacher: it addresses teachers’ mental health and the means of sustaining it.

Webinar 1

Developmental psychology and age differences in a nutshell

In this session, we will talk about the psychological peculiarities of students of different ages.
We will discuss how teaching teenagers is different from teaching adults; what makes young learners so special; what emotional, physiological, cognitive, and behavioral changes characterize each age group.
We will look at the features characteristic of each age period and will analyze typical situations that teachers often come across at the lesson.

The role of cognitive processes and emotions in language learning

No matter how much experience you have, or what ages you have been working with, you’ve probably already noticed that the emotional climate in the classroom is of no less importance than the material you teach or the approach you use. In this session, we will talk about how feelings and emotions connect to language learning. We will start with some short and basic theory explaining the nature of affect and its role in cognition. Then, through a set of activities, you will learn how learning, memory, and attention are connected with emotions. We will also look at techniques and activities which you can use in the classroom with your students, including those, coming from psychology and emotion-focused therapy.

Motivation theories in language learning

This session is dedicated to one of the most discussed, yet unclear, topics in TEFL – motivation. We all know what motivation is, but the main problems arise when we come into the classroom and face real learners, their boredom, laziness, ignorance, and misbehavior. In this session, we will talk less about theory but more about the practical application of this theory. We will discuss the connection between motivation and goal setting; we will distinguish four motivational principles and teaching recommendations you may use in your teaching practice.

Mental health and psychological well-being of an English teacher

The last session of the psychological track for ELT teachers addresses the most current topics of teachers’ mental health, burnout, and psychological well-being. We will talk about the work-life balance and the ways to sustain it. One of the key topics is professional burnout, its symptoms, consequences, and preventive measures. We will also discuss the imposter syndrome, high personal, professional, and social expectations, anxiety, self-worth, self-awareness, me-time, balance between wants and needs, and the sense of agency in teachers. The aim is to talk about teachers’ everyday challenges and struggles and the ways to confront them.
